CALL FOR ENTRIES

Last month we sent an invitation letter to the EPAU, Polytechnical College of Architecture & Urban Design, Algiers University. With that letter we invite the Chair of the faculty to select and submit the best graduation project for participation in the Archiprix International MIT USA 2011. The letter contains all necessary details. We'd like to check if the above mentioned invitation letter arrived at your school, if not please let us know, then we will send a digital copy. Of course we hope that your school will select the best graduation project of the past two years and thus gives the designer the opportunity to participate. All projects must be registered before August 1 2010, all entries must arrive at the MIT before September 1 2010!

On our website www.archiprix.org you will find a database with all university-level schools worldwide and a presentation of the world's best graduation projects submitted for the past editions Rotterdam 2001, Istanbul 2003, Glasgow 2005, Shanghai 2007 and Montevideo 2009. We invite you to take a look. New projects for the Archiprix International 2011, designed by the next generation of young talented designers will be uploaded in the next months. Among these we expect to see the best project of your faculty. Don’t hesitate to contact us in case of further questions.

We will keep you informed and hope to see you in the USA in 2011!

Yours sincerely,

Henk van der Veen

Winners announced for the Twelfth Annual, 2010, international BERKELEY UNDERGRADUATE PRIZE FOR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN EXCELLENCE

________________________________________________________________

Winners of the Twelfth Annual BERKELEY PRIZE Competition are announced today by Professor Raymond Lifchez, Chair of the BERKELEY UNDERGRADUATE PRIZE FOR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN EXCELLENCE.

Since its founding, the international BERKELEY PRIZE competition encourages undergraduate architecture students to write about issues central to the understanding of the social art of architecture and the social role of the architect in today's world. What is that role? What should it be? By asking students to grapple with just such problems, the PRIZE brings to the forefront of students' thinking the reality that architecture is a social art.

The PRIZE now comprises three separate and distinct competitions: the Essay Competition; the Travel Fellowship Competition; and the Architectural Design Fellowship Competition.

The 2009 BERKELEY PRIZE Competition attracted 115 architecture students from 26 countries. The winners reflect the diversity of the authors and illustrate the worldwide interest in and thinking about the ideals of a socially-grounded architecture. Here are the results:

This year's BERKELEY PRIZE is dedicated to "Those in the Historic Preservation/ Heritage Conservation movement throughout the world who through their daily efforts remind professionals, the public, and students that what we designate as historic is just as important as what is newly built and that the two can and should co-exist."

Both the Travel Fellowship and the Architectural Design Fellowship require written reports. These will appear on the website in late Summer and early Fall.

Watch for the announcement of the 2011 BERKELEY PRIZE on October 1, 2010.

SIDEBAR

The Berkeley Prize - How it Works

Each year, the PRIZE Committee poses a Question on its website: www.berkeleprize.org Students enrolled in any undergraduate architecture program throughout the world are invited to submit a 500-word essay proposal in English responding to the Question. From this pool of essays, approximately 25 are selected by the PRIZE Committee as particularly promising. These semifinalists are then asked to submit a 2,500-word essay expanding on their proposals.

A group of readers, composed of Committee members and invited colleagues, selects five to eight of the best Essays and sends these finalists on to a jury of international academics and architects to select the winners. The BERKELEY PRIZE Essay Competition is announced, papers submitted, and reader- and jury-reviewed all online.

The Essay semifinalists are also offered the opportunity to participate in either the BERKELEY PRIZE Travel Fellowship Competition, or the Architectural Design Fellowship:

For the Travel Fellowship, students are asked to submit a proposal of how a given architectural travel opportunity will help them capitalize on the research they did for their Essay and further their long-term academic and professional pursuits.

For the Design Fellowship, students are invited to submit proposals for a design competition at their school focused on what they believe to be a major social issue in their region or country. The BERKELEY PRIZE also supports the winning students' schools with prize money for the winners of the local competition.

During the past twelve years, over 1100 students have submitted essays and proposals, representing dozens of schools of architecture from 54 countries. In recognition of these efforts, the BERKELEY PRIZE is the recipient of the 2008 American Institute of Architects Collaborative Achievement Honor Award; and the 2002 American Institute of Architects' Education Honor Award.

The BERKELEY PRIZE has also garnered international acclaim, not the least reason for which is its complete embracing of digital technology. In partial recognition of this outreach, the 2003 BERKELEY PRIZE competition was named a special event of "World Heritage in the Digital Age," a virtual congress helping to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.
